Summary
Water electrolysis is widely recognized as a green hydrogen production technology. Among various water electrolysis techniques, solid oxide electrolyzer cells (SOECs) are considered the optimal choice due to their high conversion efficiency and absence of precious metal catalysts, especially in achieving the net-zero emissions target by 2050. However, the high cost of SOECs remains a barrier to their large-scale commercialization. SOECs have a complex multilayer structure, including cathodes, anodes, electrolytes, and interconnectors, requiring intricate high-temperature processes, thus necessitating process simplification to reduce costs. Additionally, the carbon footprint of materials and manufacturing processes poses a challenge, with carbon costs potentially remaining high. To enhance the competitiveness of SOECs, it is crucial to leverage material recycling and regeneration technologies to reduce the carbon footprint and associated costs. This will contribute to the advancement and commercialization of SOEC technology.
